Dennis Yeatman says he is not a bike rider. Yet the 64-year-old has been training since May for a 500-mile bike ride through Alabama in early October.

The longtime Rancho Bernardo resident wants to help military veterans experiencing mental health issues.

“I am doing it because I am raising money for a good cause,” said Yeatman, a retired Navy commander.

His goal is $100,000. As of Sept. 19 he had raised $28,000 in donations at bb4vets.org.

Most of that has come through his large network of friends and those he has coached in the Rancho Bernardo/Poway area for the last 30 years through the lacrosse program he and his wife, Bonnie, created in San Diego County.

“I have a nice database of people who know who I am,” Yeatman said
