Davenport IA - Next Stop Peru IL!

Today we rode 71 miles from Washington to Davenport, Iowa. We climbed 1,441 feet.

Another grind today. We departed at 0800 with police and fire department escorts. We began on a nice bike path and transitioned to the quaint downtown of Washington. We quickly rode through town and found ourselves traveling east on a busy two lane highway. We rode a conservative pace, as the road had no shoulder to speak of, and hugged the right side of the lane. Rain began to fall and we got buzzed pretty closely by a few trucks. We made the first SAG at 20 miles and commiserated. The next 24 miles brought more rain and rough roads, but at the end we arrived at the Mississippi River, where we ate lunch at a nice park. A few more tough highway miles then we transitioned to a bike path for the final miles to the hotel. Everyone felt relieved to have arrived safely, and looked forward to a hot shower. We got lucky when the hotel provided us with a hose to use to wash down our bikes.  The bikes collect a lot of grit when riding in the rain, and today we had the added bonus of riding by a concrete factory, where the road had a lot of fine grit. The hose made short work of the cleanup.

Big day tomorrow, as we'll have a long ride, cross the Mississippi, enter a new state, and start our penultimate week.

Tomorrow we will ride from Davenport, Iowa to Peru, Illinois. We will cycle 90 miles and climb 2,070 feet.
