The Flat Tire Challenge

Today we rode 53 miles from Oskaloosa to Washington, Iowa. We climbed 1,771 feet.

Today looked like a straightforward 50-miler with a little climbing mixed in. It almost played out that way. After a leisurely 1000 start out of the parking lot and another fire department escort out of town, we rolled down highway 92 about 23 miles to Walk Er Drive Thru where we had a delicious lunch. Malts and milkshakes played a big part in the lunch, and everyone indulged guilt-free after all the riding we've done this week. After lunch we had a flat tire in the parking lot, which did not bode well for the remainder of the day. With only 30-ish miles to go to the hotel, we did not think much of it at the time, but a number of technical issues would keep some riders from getting to the hotel for hours. We kept reminding ourselves that we were lucky it was a short day. Eventually everyone made it in and we went through the usual evening drill of unpacking the truck, checking in, and eating dinner. Tonight some of our teammates organized a Chinese takeaway feast in the hotel's breakfast area. It was fantastic and a great end to the day.

Tomorrow we will ride from Washington to Davenport, Iowa. We will cycle 71 miles and climb 1,722 feet.
